This mind-blowingly open-ended RPG might be the next Baldur’s Gate 3- ‘If you have the patience, you could wipe out an entire town by just turning everyone against each other’-

Unforetold: Witchstone was maybe the biggest surprise for me at our PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted showcase. The Spearhead Games CRPG almost evokes Larian’s first Divinity: Original Sin game in its presentation, but instead of pursuing cinematic RPG production values, Witchstone is like an alternate evolutionary path emphasizing the construction of an open-ended, RPG sandbox.

“Freedom alone is cool, but you want that world to respond. In tabletop, you have a game master, you have other players, there’s always a response,” explains Spearhead co-founder and creative director, Malik Boukhira in an expanded interview with PC Gamer, noting that real videogame freedom “is also about creativity, feeling clever, feeling like you did things your way.”

The RPG’s promised influence system sounds like almost nothing I’ve seen in an RPG. You can turn up the charm on any NPC in the game, using your capacity for persuasion, intimidation, or downright lying to get anybody to do pr…

Ubisoft accidentally releases Beyond Good and Evil remaster, remembers it doesn’t do that sort of thing, attempts to scrub all trace from the internet, then gives up and announces it anyway-

Update: Looks like Ubisoft’s given up trying to keep this one quiet. In a post on Twitter, the company threw in the towel and admitted it has a 20th anniversary remaster of BG&E on the way, with more info to come in early 2024. The company also said that the build that went out to Ubisoft+ subscribers as part of this leak “is not indicative of the final game,” so there’s some hope for those of us put off by those dodgy screenshots making the rounds.

Original story: For years, Ubisoft has had one, single job: Not releasing Beyond Good and Evil games. To its credit, it’s done the work with aplomb for a good long while now. Sure, sometimes we’ll get some fanciful BG&E 2 trailer, a LinkedIn bio will change, or Joseph Gordon-Levitt will appear, but the studio’s fundamental principle of not releasing a game in this series has never wavered.

Until yesterday. A few months after the ESRB leaked that Ubisoft was working on some kind of…

Vampire- The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 reveals its first clan, the Brujah, four years after it revealed its first clan, the Brujah-

Now that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has a new developer, The Chinese Room, we’re going through the whole rigamarole of teasers and reveals all over again, starting now and carrying on into 2024, and possibly beyond. I hope you’re prepared.

This is why, more than four years after I wrote “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2’s first full-blood clan is the Brujah”, I’m once again introducing you all to the Brujah. I am very tired. And while the 2019 reveal gave us details on the Brujah Disciplines—their fancy vamp powers—we’ll have to assume they have all been changed in at least some way. Unfortunately, this re-reveal doesn’t go into much detail.

All we know about this version of the clan is that they are very into smacking things around in melee combat, and their first revealed Discipline is a charge attack that lets the undead brawlers gain momentum before grabbing foes, dragging them around and slamming them into things…

Unity manager publicly states company is ‘out of touch’, is fired within three hours-

A manager at game-engine developer Unity has been fired after calling the company “out of touch”.

Miranda Due, Senior Partner Relations Manager at Unity, originally made the remark in reference to an executive’s idea for making commuting to Unity’s offices easier.

“A Unity exec just shared that they rent a secondary [apartment] in [San Francisco] to make it easier to be in the office- maybe we should all just do this to make it easier to RTO [return to office]” Due tweeted on May 8. “This company has lost it. Completely out of touch.”

Less than three hours later, Due followed up her tweet with another post, stating “I got fired on my one year anniversary” The firing also occurred less than a month before Due’s vesting date, the point at which an employee receives company benefits (like stock options or retirement funds) after contractually fulfilling a term of employment.

Due explained why she considered such a remark out of touch in a follow-up to the origin…

Wolcen- Lords of Mayhem ends development, with multiplayer to shut down in September-

Developers Wolcen Studio have announced that 2020 action RPG Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem will receive no further development or support, and that its multiplayer component will end later this year.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce a significant change: Starting September 3, 2024, Wolcen will no longer support multiplayer functionality. Additionally, we will cease further development and support for the game,” they said in a post to their website and to Steam.

Fans have probabaly seen this coming for some time now. Wolcen’s last proper patch was July of last year, though it did get Steam Cloud support in November. That’s not to say Wolcen is an incomplete game: A patch in May of 2023 added the final chapter of its story.

But the shutdown of a multiplayer game is always fraught. A number of negative reviews have popped up on Steam following the announcement, almost entirely citing the removal of a game component that people paid for access to.

“We want to…

Warner Bros execs pine for the Hogwarts Legacy glory days as games revenue plummets 41% thanks to Suicide Squad’s abysmal performance-

Rocksteady has made some excellent games in its time, so I honestly feel a bit bad about the lead-balloon performance of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. I probably don’t feel as bad about it as Warner Bros does, though: The entertainment megacorp just released its earnings statement for Q2 2024, and the news for its games revenue isn’t great.

Specifically, games revenue is down an eye-watering 41% compared to Q2 2023. The reason? Rocksteady’s ill-fated baby. Downturns were “primarily driven by the weak performance of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League this year,” say Warner execs, adding that the bruise is all the more tender given “the strong performance of Hogwarts Legacy in the prior year.”

I imagine Warner bosses comparing Suicide Squad to its Potterverse golden child twists the knife a bit for the folks at Rocksteady, but the news isn’t really a surprise. We learnt a couple of months ago that Suicide Squad lost Warner a whopping $200 million after the ga…
